Biography

Professor Daniels has a BSW from Morgan State University, an MSW from University of Maryland School of Social Work, a PhD in Higher Education from Morgan State University, and a Doctorate Degree in Theology/Public Health from United Theological Seminary. He is an Associate Professor in the BSW Department of Morgan State University, Baltimore, MD. Dr. Daniels is also a post-doctoral Harvard University Fellow, former Senior Fellow with the National Center for Health Behavioral Change, and a current International Fellow with the International Institute Human Sciences. He is curriculum chair for undergraduate and graduate courses on Spirituality, Religion, and the Helping Tradition at MSU. Dr. Daniels is also Episcopal Sr. Pastor at St. Martin Church of Christ in Baltimore.

Dr. Daniels is a licensed clinical social worker and counselor who holds a Certification of Advanced Studies in Addictions Counseling from Johns Hopkins University. In 2015, in response to community unrest, he initiated a collaborative cultural competence training for the Baltimore City Police Department and is a Principal Investigator for the Baltimore Consent Decree. The state governor appointed him to serve on the Maryland Judicial Inquiry Board for 10 years. He also developed 6 faith-based urban models for men, public health, gang intervention, intergenerational conversations, trauma - informed Healing-centered approach (HUT), and Police and Community Engagement ( PACE). During COVID-19, he was appointed by the then Mayor Jack Young as the Mental Health Coordinator for the city of Baltimore and developed HUT for trauma-informed Community Conversations. Dr. Daniels assisted in developing legislation for the “Elijah Cummings Healing Centered Act” and was one of the inaugural members of the “Trauma-Informed Task Force” to develop further policy for all of the departments in the city.

Dr. Daniels was recently appointed by Mayor Brandon Scott as the President for the Affordable Housing Trust Fund (AHTF) for Baltimore City. He is the Inaugural President for the Minister’s Conference Empowerment Center CDC ( MCEC CDC) and recently received $1.2 million for “The Cradle to Career” STEM  centers for faith-based and community Hubs. Dr. Daniels serves as Chair of Civic Action with the Minister’s Conference of Baltimore and Vicinity, A Member of the Board of Directors for the Baltimore Behavioral Health System, and a community strategist with Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development. Dr. Daniels recently received the National Community Service Award from the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, the International Community Service Award (Montreal, Canada), and the Edward Canda Award for Outstanding Contributions on Spirituality in Social Work from the Society for Spirituality and Social Work.

Research

Professor Daniel’s research highlights cultural competence, mental health in the African American community, families and children, and obesity in the African American community. He has published on topics related to urban community policing, the church’s role in public health and health promotion, BSW education in a historically Black university, urban faith-based social work in African American communities, spirituality and healing for trauma in urban communities, and workplace wellbeing.
