Biography

Dr. Starnino has a Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of Kansas (2011), a Master of Social Work from McGill University (2001), a Bachelor of Social Work from McGill University (1999), and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University in Montreal (1998). He joined the faculty of the School of Social Work at Indiana University in 2011 and became an Associate Professor in 2017.

Research

Dr. Starnino’s work focuses on the integration of spirituality in mental health recovery and mental health services. His current and recent research grants have addressed ways of applying a spiritually integrated approach for treating veterans with PTSD, including funding from the John Templeton Foundation. His research, publications, and presentations focus on spirituality in relation to military trauma, moral injury, mental health recovery, mental health consumers’ perspectives, human development, and spiritual strengths assessment in mental health. He is currently the lead investigator for a study testing the effectiveness of a spiritually-related group intervention for veterans with PTSD (called Search for Meaning). Dr. Starnino conducted previous intervention research on a widely used mental health recovery program (Wellness Recovery Action Planning), as well as research on spiritual assessment and the spiritual developmental process of people with severe mental illness in the context of recovery.
